Introducing ATAS: Building AI That Understands Rwanda

ATAS is a Rwandan AI research and development company, founded in Kigali in 2025. Here's what we're building, and why we started with research instead of a product.

Abstract illustration of a single origin point branching into several distinct forms.

ATAS — the Alliance for Transformative AI Systems — is an AI research and development company based in Kigali, Rwanda. We started in 2025 with a simple observation: most AI is built for languages, places, and ways of life that are not Rwandan, and Kinyarwanda-speaking Rwanda deserves AI built from the ground up, not translated from somewhere else.

Why we started with research

It would have been faster to build a product first and skip the research. We chose not to, because the hard problems — Kinyarwanda speech, informal Rwandan geography, low-resource language modeling — needed solving well before any product built on top of them would actually work for the people using it.

Where things stand

  • Active research in Kinyarwanda voice AI, contextual AI for Rwanda, low-resource language modeling, and accessible AI design

  • AcademiaPlus, our national curriculum platform for secondary education, in active development

  • Based in Kigali, currently a small team

  • This is where we're starting. We'll use this newsroom to share real progress as it happens — not before.
